This is a record player that plays the haunting, sad songs of dead trees.
Created by Bartholomäus Traubeck, this amazing device works by analyzing the growth rings on a slice of a tree, using a small camera. This data is sent to a computer, and the strength, thickness, and colour are mapped to a scale, which is then translated into piano music.
So while it’s not so much ‘playing’ as ‘interpreting’ the patterns on the wood, it still outputs a unique composition for each individual slice, and the results are surprisingly moving.
